Tips for Preparing for a Family Photo Session

As a portrait photographer specialising in family photography, I understand that preparing for a photo session with kids can sometimes feel overwhelming. But don't worry; I'm here to offer some tips to help make the experience enjoyable and stress-free for you and your little ones.

6 Tips for Preparing for Your Family Session

Choose the right time of day: i highly recommend scheduling your outdoor session for the late afternoon, about an hour before sunset. This magical time of day is known as the golden hour and provides gorgeous light for your photos. But, of course, I understand that every family has unique needs and scheduling preferences. So, whether you prefer a morning session or an in-home shoot, I'm happy to work with you to make it happen.

Regardless of the time of day, a few things can help ensure your photo session goes smoothly. For starters, make sure everyone in your family gets a good night's sleep the night before and eats a nutritious meal beforehand. A well-rested and well-fed child is much more likely to be cooperative and engaged during the shoot, resulting in beautiful and genuine photos you will treasure for years.

Keep it fun and playful: When it comes to taking photos of kids, we all know they can get a little restless or bored. But don't worry; there are plenty of ways to keep things light and fun! Encouraging them to be themselves and play around can help them feel comfortable and engaged.

If your little ones need extra motivation, snacks and treats can be a great way to keep them happy and focused during the shoot. And, if they do a great job, a special treat they love can be given as a reward! It's a win-win situation. By making the photo session a fun experience, your kids will be more likely to cooperate and have a great time.

Come prepared: Bring along any necessary items, such as snacks and drinks, and dress your kids in comfy clothes they feel good in and can move around easily in. It's also a great idea to bring a backup outfit in case of unexpected messes!

Involve your kids: Let them help pick out their outfits, choose the location, and suggest poses or props. This can help them feel more excited and invested in the photo session. And don't forget to prepare everyone in your family for what to expect!

Have patience and go with the flow: During the photo session, remember to have patience and go with the flow. Kids can be unpredictable, but sometimes the best photos come from those candid moments. Instead of asking them to smile or say "cheese," focus on making them genuinely happy and laugh. This will result in more natural and authentic photos that capture your family enjoying each other's company.

Trust your photographer: As a professional photographer, I have experience working with kids and know how to get the best possible photos. Trust me to guide you and your family through the session and capture lasting memories. With these tips in mind, you'll be well-prepared to have a fun photo session with your family.

Here's a suggested pack list for your upcoming family photography session:

  • A change of clothes for each family member

  • Snacks or treats and water bottles to keep everyone energised and happy during the shoot

  • Towels to wipe off any dirt or sand from feet and hands

  • A blanket in a neutral colour for sitting or lying down on during the shoot

  • Any special items you'd like included in the photos, such as a family heirloom or a child's favourite toy

  • Comfortable, walkable shoes for everyone

  • Wipes for quick cleanups

  • Layers to accommodate for changing weather conditions

Remember, family photo sessions should be a fun experience for everyone involved.

At my family photography sessions, I prioritise creating a comfortable and enjoyable atmosphere for everyone involved. I don't believe in stiff, posed photos - instead, I encourage playfulness and spontaneity. Your kids are welcome to be themselves, run around and have fun, often leading to the most natural and beautiful shots. My approach aims to result in genuine and heartfelt smiles. Often you’ll find me laughing and having a great time with you, as I truly enjoy capturing your family's special moments.
